A Chinese Wheel of Life

Sunday January 4, 2009
Chinese Bhava Chakra

This sculpture at the Dazu Stone Carvings in Chongqing, China, is unmistakably a Wheel of Life. However, what I can make out of the details differs from the way the Wheel commonly is rendered in Tibetan iconography. For example, there appears to be a Buddha at the center instead of a cock, pig and snake.

The Dazu Stone Carvings are located about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Chongqing. More than 100,000 individual sculptures are carved at the site, most from the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. The carvings are a World Heritage Site.
