Vegetarian Haggis, and Other Wonders of the Web

Yes, vegetarian haggis (via). But ... why?

I'm bookmarking this one -- Treeleaf Zendo has an interactive meditation timer, complete with virtual incense. I've been using a plain old timer that goes "beep," which is a little jarring. Bells are better. (via)

At Shambhala Sunspace, Rod Sperry of The Worst Horse discusses the new film Robin Hood: The New Zen Warrior. You can find a link to the trailer in the article. (I decided not to link to it here because it is not entirely family friendly.) The trailer is brilliant as spoof, but, um, I think I'll skip the movie and go for the vegetarian haggis.

The trailer is indeed brilliant — don’t see the spoof angle Barbara. But then again its not meant for your demographic but for the cooler young people who actually watch Hollywood films lol. I find it weird that you would call a film promoting the Buddha. Bodhi Dharma and Shantideva’s Way of the Boshisattva spoof … but I guess your the typical western Buddhist who hates the martial arts and wants everything about Buddhism to be “family friendly” .. anyway, a film that uses the Robin Hood story to promote the Dharma rocks .. too bad watered down western Buddhists like you have to put a negative spin on the film even before its released. Its your karma and you’ll have to deal with it someday.

I saw the trailer and the first word that popped into my mind was, “cheesy”. I was hoping it was a spoof, but sadly it probably isn’t.

@ Mark,
Since when did Buddhists have to like crappy movies just because they mention the Buddha? I can say crappy because that’s my opinion. If you don’t agree fine, but seriously, you really have to go the whole “watered-down western Buddhist” route? How asinine of you.

To commenters: You are welcome to post your opinion of the “Robin Hood” trailer, which rather reeked of cheesiness to me, but if you liked it that’s fine. To each his own. However, you will offer your opinion without throwing childish temper tantrums or hurling insults at other commenters. Otherwise, you comment will be deleted. Thank you.

Hi Barbara, Mark and Jamie G,

I thought the trailer was very well done. Also, it is very non Buddhist to say its cheesy. A Buddhist should always promote Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and so if someone else from the Sangha is making a project to promote Dharma and Buddha you should never put it down. Buddhists practice kindness in their words and never use words that can hurt others. Also, I doubt very much either of you could make a project on such a big magnitude shot all over the world etc so who are you to find fault? You are not Roger Ebert or a film critic and so should not make fun. Be assured, if you make negative or hurtful comments about others, they will always come back to you. So practice the religion of kindness which is Buddhism.

OK Everyone … if the first preview was really good … the brand new trailer is really great!! I think its the perfect example of upaya or skillful means which means the filmmaker is using a lot of Hollywood like style to promote the Dharma to the young generation. Check out the new trailer and then decide for yourself. =)

Wow, I guess if you’re buddhist you’re not allowed to criticize anything or anyone – unless it’s someone who criticizes something or someone else.
Hmm. Paradox! The seed of all spirituality!
