Labrang Monastery Update

Friday May 8, 2009

Last March I wrote a post called "Life in Labrang Monastery" about one of the great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Among other items, the post discussed a senior monk named Jigme Guri (or Gyatso) who was arrested by Chinese authorities in November. Lama Jigme had recorded a video testimony of being tortured that was broadcast on Voice of America

The International Campaign for Tibet reports that Lama Jigme has been released from prison, on probation. His movements and communication are tightly restricted, but at least he is not in prison.
