Bodhi

By Barbara O'Brien, About.com

Definition:

The Sanskrit word bodhi means "awakened." This word roughly correlates to "enlightened" in English. The word buddha is a variation of bodhi, meaning "awakened one."

In Theravada Buddhism, this awakening occurs when one has perfectly realized the Buddha's teaching of the Four Noble Truths.

In Mahayana Buddhism, the awakening experience is explained as realization of the true nature of reality. It is also explained as awakening to one's own buddha-nature.
