Shikantaza

By Barbara O'Brien, About.com

Definition:

"Shikantaza" means "just sitting." As a form of zazen, shikantaza is sitting silently and alertly, observing thoughts without attaching to them. A person doing shikantaza does not use a mantra or any other kind of focus object. It is, literally, "just sitting."

Shikantaza is associated with the Soto school of Zen Buddhism.
