Medicine Buddha Tattoo

The Medicine Buddha, Bhaishajya-guru-buddha

Owner: Glen Clabaugh. Artist: Jason Salinaz, Avalon Tattoo, San Diego, CA

Bhaishajya-guru-buddha, commonly called the "Medicine Buddha," represents the healing of buddhahood. In art he is nearly always blue and holds a begging bowl and a healing plant in his left hand. His right hand usually is held palm outward in a gesture of protection. Visualizing the Medicine Buddha in meditation is said to have a healing effect on physical and mental illness.
