Jokhang is the first Buddhist temple in Tibet, and for many Tibetans the most sacred. It was built by King Songtsen Gampo, probably in 642, for his Buddhist bride, the Princess Wencheng of China. Princess Wencheng and Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal, another wife of King Songtsen Gampo, are credited with bringing Buddhism to Tibet.
