Buddhist Teachings on the Skandhas and the Self

The First Noble Truth is about the suffering and impermanence of life. But as we consider the many forms of suffering, we should also be asking who is it that suffers? The confusion, fear and disappointment of our lives is rooted in misunderstanding of who we are. Throughly understanding the self is an essential part of the Buddhist path.
The Five Skandhas
The historical Buddha spoke often of the Five Skandhas, also called the Five Aggregates or the Five Heaps. What we think of as "I" is a process of the skandhas. Here is a basic explanation of the skandhas.
What Is the Self?
The Buddha taught that an individual is a combination of five aggregates, called the Five Skandhas. The skandhas are empty of intrinsic self; the self is no-self (anatman or anatta in Theravada Buddhism and shunyata in Mahayana Buddhism). These teachings are difficult to understand but essential to Buddhism.
Dharma Talk: The Five Skandhas
The Buddha said we are the five skandhas. The word skandha means heap, aggregate, or component of individuality. What does it mean to be five of these?
Anatta or Soul-lessness and Rebirth
The Buddhist doctrine of rebirth should be distinguished from the theory of reincarnation, which implies the transmigration of a soul Buddhism denies the existence of an unchanging or eternal soul.
