Duruthu Poya Day

Saturday January 10, 2009

Today is Duruthu Poya Day, which is the observance of the Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka. The Buddha is said to have come between two opposing armies, and his message of peace caused the warriors to lay down their weapons and pledge to follow the dharma.

Today the Sri Lankan army is closing in on Mullaitivu, a stronghold of the separatist Tamil guerrillas, according to the BBC. No peace on this Duruthu Poya Day.

Those fighting may not have laid down arms but hopefully some people invited some extra Dharma into their hearts despite that, and laid down the arms of hatred at least individually and at home. I think, for now, this is the only place for real ahimsa, peace, and compassion to take seed anyway.
